29letters T-Shirts
June 26, 2009
I did some Arabic Vernacular T-Shirts design in my spare time.
I would appreciate your comments on them.
You would buy any? There is a style you prefer against another? or…

The number of Arabic letters that creates the Arabic script is 29.
29 letters in Arabic will be “29 حرف”
It can be an educational t-shirt about the Arabic script.
It is also the name of my website and future company.
Graffiti style was implemented.

The word ENOUGH is written in Arabic in Graffiti style. Enough in Arabic is “بكفي”.
It is a social and political statement for the Arab politics and leaders.
Done in black & white to give a serious and gloomy feel.

The slang Lebanese sentence “شو في ما في؟” is used as “What’s Up?” in English.
It is used in the everyday life of the Lebanese people.
Graffiti style with happy fresh colors.

I Love … , I Love Taboulé, I Love Mankoushé, I Love my neighbor…
I love in Arabic is “إنا بحب”.
The I Love NY visual is done in Arabic.
It can be only I Love. And the owner can write what he wants under it.
Or some Arabic loveable items and food can be written below it.

The first one is cool. The typography in it is interesting. My least favorite one is the “I love…”. It’s a little cliche, and everyone’s already doing it.
By the way, if you are interested in t-shirt and stuff, have you checked out Blouzaat? They have some really nice Arabic typography in their designs.www.blouzaat.com
Other local t-shirt makers that I can think of are these guys called Jo Bedu, not much in terms of type, but super brilliant in terms of localizing a message. For example, they have a shirt that looks like the Orange logo with “Zarga” written instead. Brilliant.Don’t think they have a website.

Hello,
Amazing work pascal, ever since i got the typographic matchmaking book i couldn’t find any Arabic typeface that works for me better than “Sada”… You did such a great job on that.
I just need to ask, if i did some personal projects with it, is it ok to use the version i got from the book?
And let’s say i did some t-shirt design to be sold locally, then i should buy a licence?
P.S. The T-shirt pictures aren’t showing on this post :S

Hello Hadi
thanks for your comment on Sada which is now named FF Seria Arabic and published from FontFont.
as you have mentioned, if you are using the font for non-commercial use, then you can stick to the Beta versions of the font on the cd that comes with the book. But once you are using it for commercial use, then you need to buy a license. you can by the license of the final OpenType version of the font from FontFont / FontShop.
here is the link:
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/downloads/fontfont/ff_seria_arabic/
for the images in the post. thanks for the notice. i will check this issue out.

I quite like the “شو في ما في؟” (Whats Up) tee, the colours and style remind me of The Fresh Prince and B Boys – real fresh bro!
Overall interesting designs but with the greatest repect to you Pascal, Mohammad Ali (aka Aerosol Arabic) of Birmingham, England holds the crown for graffiti style Arabic design.
He has managed to accumulate a spectacular media following with MSNBC, CNN, BBC amongst innumerable other global networks and press organisations having profiled collections of his work and the man.
The greatest thing is not only is his work superior aesthetically and in craft – but he fervently shares his talent in community workshops – helping to build bridges between Islamic and non Islamic communities – and helped cement communal engagement with various murals in the UK, USA and Australia.
Well worth checking out: http://www.aerosolarabic.com
Salaam / Peace
