Some work of my students from the “Fundamentals of Design I” course at NDU. Brief 01 is to represent the Lebanese roads and highways while Brief 02 is to document traditional Lebanese fast food merchants and shops. The students were asked to take several photos about the chosen topic and then to choose a minimum of 5 photos to create the artwork. From the 5 photos one was chosen as a main photo and the others became secondary. The idea was to make the main photo incorporate the other object or shapes within it. I will not be able to fully explain the brief but have a look on some of the projects and you can see the transformation from the main photo to the final colored art piece. At the end of this post you can read the second brief about traditional Lebanese fast food.

1st phase | Vernacular Research and Photography
The class will be divided into groups (2 or 3 students each). Every Group will make a vernacular photographic research about traditional Lebanese fast food (Man’oushé, Shawarma, ka3ik, etc.) or Lebanese road merchants (fruits, corn, ka3ik, etc.). Each student should choose a topic for his/her artwork and pick the appropriate images from the photographic research in order to be used in the creation of the artwork.

2nd phase | Mapping of chosen photos and creating units
Choose the best photos from your photographic vernacular research and set a main image and several secondary images. The main image is going to be used in the whole area of the artwork while the secondary images are going to be used to take units from and use them in a grid or as foreground shapes.

3rd phase | Layout and Grid / Positive & Negative Spaces
Experiment with different grid formations keeping in mind the positive and negative areas. Is the artwork going to be based on a grid or collage units in and positive negative layout? How many layers are there going to be in the artwork?

4th phase | Color & Texture / Foreground & Background
Experiment and chose the colors and where texture is needed in the artwork. Consider which units are going to be in the foreground and the others in the background.

Presentation | Project Formats
The formats for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th phase are going to be within A4.
The format of the Final Project is going to within A2.
