Arabic Monograms

March 26, 2007

Students of the ‘Applied Typography’ course at NDU were asked to do an Arabic or Arabic/Latin monogram for a fake textile company. Here are some pics of the sketching process.

I introduced the course by teaching the students techniques of sketching and drawing type. Then we moved to drawing the combination of letters and create the monograms. A monogram by definition is a design of one or more letters, usually the initials of a name, used to decorate or identify an individual or a company.

Some of the students focused only on Arabic monograms or Latin monograms while other students studied the possible of combining Arabic and Latin letters in one monogram.

It is a nice ‘Hands On’ project that makes students learn more about letters and understand their structure and anatomy.

    Hey Samer

Well keep up the hard work and focus on the projects instead of the political status in Lebanon. I will see you on Friday and we will discuss the projects. Cheers

Nice calligraphy! My question is: How can you make the style more personal? How can one distinguish oneself? http://kunstacademie.blogspot.com
